Bridal guide / Uttar Pradesh

Bridal makeup in Uttar Pradesh.
Where the story began.

Tanya Gupta’s first call sheet was in Kanpur in 2013. Uttar Pradesh weddings, with their tilak, baraat, midnight pheras and dawn vidaai, are where her craft started.

Tanya Gupta Atelier / Uttar Pradesh

Tradition,
through the night.

Weddings in Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Agra, Prayagraj and across Uttar Pradesh are rich in ritual: a tilak, haldi and mehendi, a sangeet, then the baraat, jaimala on stage, pheras that often begin late at night and a vidaai at dawn. The bride may be photographed for twelve hours or more on the wedding day alone.

Many brides wear deep red or maroon Banarasi silk or a heavily worked lehenga with traditional gold or kundan jewellery: maang tikka, nath and layered necklaces. The makeup has to stand up to that richness without looking heavy, and still look fresh in the soft morning light of the vidaai.

The look journey

From tilak
to vidaai.

Common Uttar Pradesh functions, and what each look is built to do.

  1. 01

    Tilak & engagement

Elegant and understated for family ceremonies, with a natural base and soft definition that photographs well up close.

  2. 02

    Haldi & mehendi

Light, waterproof and comfortable through turmeric, flowers and long seated hours, with hair kept away from the henna.

  3. 03

    Sangeet

Festive glamour with more shimmer and a defined eye, set to survive dancing late into the evening.

  4. 04

    Baraat & jaimala

The classic bridal look at its fullest, balanced against Banarasi silk and heavy jewellery, and checked for the stage lighting and flash of the jaimala.

  5. 05

    Night pheras

Long-wear layers and a planned touch-up before the pheras, so the bride looks as fresh after midnight as she did at the jaimala.

  6. 06

    Vidaai at dawn

A quiet refresh for the emotional final photographs in daylight, so the look stays soft rather than tired.

Season & climate

Fog, heat
and auspicious dates.

The wedding season

The main season begins after Dev Uthani Ekadashi in November and runs through February, with auspicious dates filling early for families, venues and artists.

Winter fog and cold

December and January bring cold nights and dense fog, which can delay travel. Arrival times are planned with extra buffer, and skin is prepped for cold, dry air.

Summer heat

Weddings from April to June can reach 45°C. Sweat-resistant layers, lighter textures for daytime functions and a cool getting-ready room make the biggest difference.

Long wedding nights

With pheras late at night and vidaai at dawn, the plan includes a touch-up schedule and a small kit held by a family member.

Questions brides ask

Uttar Pradesh
bridal FAQs.

Straight answers from Tanya Gupta’s team. For anything else, ask about your date.

Do you take bridal bookings in Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Agra?
Yes. Tanya Gupta’s career began in Kanpur, and bridal bookings are taken across Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Agra, Prayagraj, Noida and Ghaziabad. Other cities and destination venues are considered on request.
How does bridal makeup last from the jaimala to a dawn vidaai?
Long-wear layers applied thinly, setting chosen for the season, and a touch-up planned before the pheras. A small kit stays with a family member so the look can be refreshed before the vidaai photographs.
What makeup suits a red Banarasi silk saree?
A luminous, even base, warmth on the cheeks and a defined eye, with a lip shade chosen against the saree’s exact red or maroon. The richness of the silk and gold jewellery should lead, so the makeup balances them rather than competing.
When does the wedding season start in Uttar Pradesh, and how early should I book?
The main season usually begins after Dev Uthani Ekadashi in November and runs through February. Enquire as soon as your dates are fixed, ideally six to nine months ahead for peak dates.
Can your team do makeup for the family for the tilak and wedding?
Yes. Artists for the mother of the bride, sisters and other family members can be booked alongside the bride. Share the number of people and each function’s timing early.
When should I do my bridal makeup trial?
Around eight to twelve weeks before the wedding, with your outfit and jewellery references. Avoid introducing new facials or products in the final week.
